The novel follows Ellen Branford, a Manhattan attorney who is engaged to Hayden, another Manhattan attorney. Hayden has aspirations for political office so the two are planning the wedding event of the season. When Ellen’s grandmother is dying, she leaves Ellen with one final request, so she takes off to go to Beacon, Maine to fulfill her grandmother’s last wish. She is tasked with delivering a letter to a man in this small town, however when she gets there, Ellen has a hard time locating Chet Cummings.

While in Beacon, Ellen unravels pieces of her grandmother’s life before she married her grandfather. This part of the woman’s life was never known by anyone in the family. This woman had a love (Chet) and a future in Beacon however she left and fell in love with Ellen’s grandfather.

The story of Chet and her grandmother’s love becomes clear to Ellen as she finds out more and more about her family’s past. Through a chance encounter—in which Ellen nearly drowns—she meets Roy, who rescues her from the undertow and eventually befriends her. The two of them discover their pasts are linked. Roy’s uncle was Chet Cummings.

As Ellen and Roy discover how their families were linked in the past, they also learn the same lessons that Ellen’s grandmother and Roy’s uncle learned and experienced. Sometimes things happen to change the path we are on. Sometimes our hearts are set on one path, but we discover they belong on another one.
