‘Savannah Sunrise’ shines on DVD

“Savannah Sunrise” is a humorous and heartening story of three generations of one family. Pamela Reed and Shawnee Smith star as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in this humorous road trip movie.

Reed stars as Lorraine, a widow who has lived in her home for a long time. But it’s time to move on since her husband has been gone for a while, and her family wants her to be closer to them, although in a retirement community – not a nursing home.

Smith stars as Joy, a hard-working mother who is an efficiency expert. She has her days planned out to the minute. But when Joy is tasked with driving her mother-in-law from Kentucky to Georgia while her family packs up the woman’s house, all her plans go out the window.

Joy intends on conducting business calls and getting work done on the drive, but those plans are destroyed within the first few miles of the journey. Lorraine’s bladder is always begging for a restroom, and Joy discovers she must stop more than she planned. So much for a quick drive!

As they continue on a trip that was supposed to be an uneventful journey, one thing after another happens. Joy grows increasingly weary and frustrated with Lorraine. And when Lorraine takes them on an 80-mile side trip to visit her best friend, Joy realizes they must spend the night on the road instead of driving straight through.

Joy grows increasingly frustrated with Lorraine as the miles go by. But the women share some interesting — and hilarious — experiences on their journey. And in the process learn more about each other as their bond grows stronger. They have several laugh-out-loud moments, and Joy’s stress lessens as they get closer to Savannah.

Joy decides she would like Lorraine to move in with them, especially once she realizes the woman isn’t overly excited about her new living arrangements. Lorraine accepts. But is this the right thing for them?

“Savannah Sunrise” is an endearing story of family and aging. It is available at Walmart.
